A Block   Socials 11

Today we watched the end of the video on the turn of the century. We discussed the differences in the diff time periods. We looked at the immigration patterns from 1913 to a discussion on the current immigration patterns.

C Block   Law 12

Today we looked at the different categories of law. Although most media coverage is focused on Criminal Law, there are many other different kinds of law. We examined some of them. Students were given a Current Events Assignment to work on. It will be an ongoing assignment and should be due in a couple of weeks.

Friday September 16/16

E Block   Law 12

Today was an extended work period from the work that we did last class. Make sure the timeline on the History of Law is completed for next class.

F Block   Crim 12

Today we worked continued our discussion on Conrad Black and the Sand Brothers. The students were given a Venn diagram to look at the similarities and differences between the two.
Next we discussed some simple terms...what is a crime?  Most of the students agreed on the definition of 'something that breaks the law'. We discussed what is a criminal next. And the class agreed atht anybody who breaks the law is a criminal.  However when I proposed to the class that we are all criminals for downloading music or movies without paying for them, it sparked a fierce debat. Students did not see themselves as criminals so we had to rework the definition multiple times. This led to perfectly to our next topic of discussion...Hagan's Varieties of Deviance.
We discussed what is deviant but not criminal vs what is criminal but not deviant.

Good class discussion today.

Thursday September 15/16

F Block  Crim 12.

Today I handed out the first chapter booklet. I had the students read about the Sand Bros and Conrad Black. We stopped to discuss the lives of the Sand Bros and what led them to become the criminals that they were. Lots of great discussion and analysis on the issues that led them to murder. Next we discussed the life of Conrad Black. A stark difference in many ways yet both these groups of men are criminals in the eyes of the law.
The students created a personal criminology blog as well. The purpose of this blog is to cut down on paper and to post some of their assigned work on. I will be giving you readings and opinion pieces throughout the year...Please keep your blogs updated as we get closer to the end of the term.

E Block   Law 12

Began a discussion on the history of law...where did our current system of laws come from. Students were given a History of Law assignment.
Due Next class.

A Block   Socials 11

Today we discussed the differences between the turn of the century and now. How were things different is the 1900's compared to now. We watched a Documentary called "turn of the century". The students filled out a worksheet that compared the two eras based on diff criteria.

We also had a discussion on Trace evidence. The students were asked what the did in the last 24 hours. What evidence did they leave behind that could be viewed as trace evidence. Was it accidental or on purpose. What if that was the only evidence historians found in the future. What would it say about them or how they lived their lives?

E Block   Law 12

Students filled out an All About Me sheet that should help enlighten me about who you are/what kinds of strategies help you learn and just some background info on what makes you tick.
We had a discussion on the difference between laws and rules. Looked at 10 examples and students decided between the two.
How do laws affect our lives...looked at multiple examples from traffic to the food we eat.
What are Morals/Ethics...where do we get them from. Interesting discussion on the influence of family to friends to media.
Finally the students worked on pg. 40 a-i.

F Block   Crim 12.

We started the class with a discussion on what are the typical characteristics of a Criminal. Interesting discussion on this topic. After discussion how the mental state of  this individual might be responsible for their actions, I had the class take a Personality Disorder Test. Just to see who I should keep my eye on.
Enjoy finding out about yourselves.
http://similarminds.com/personality_disorder.html

Students were to write down the top four personality disorders along with the percentage associated with each. Give a brief description of the four personality types and then whether the test was accurate or not.
